Solar Decathlon

9/12/2011

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an international competition that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production. The Solar Decathlon 2011 will be held at the National Mall’s West Potomac Park from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2, 2011. Open to the public and free of charge, the Solar Decathlon allows visitors to tour ultra-efficient houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes, and learn how energy-saving features can help reduce power bills. Zehnder America is proud to support the Solar Decathlon by providing our ComfoSystems to two of the participants this year. Zehnder ComfoAir Energy Recovery Ventilators and the innovative ComfoTube distribution system will be found in the Middlebury College “Self Reliance” house and in the Parsons and Stevens Institute of Technology “Empowerhouse”. Additionally, following the event in September the Empowerhouse module will be moved to a neighborhood in Washington, DC and married to a site-built module, and they will comprise a Habitat for Humanity duplex, providing energy efficient housing for two local families.
