Solar Decathlon Results

10/31/2011

After two long years of designing and building cutting edge solar powered homes, the nineteen collegiate teams competing in the 2011 DOE Solar Decathlon had their days in the sun. Zehnder was a proud sponsor of two teams in the competition and we are happy to share their successes. Middlebury College was a groundbreaking team in this year’s competition as the first team ever to come from a liberal arts school without a technical program. They left quite a few engineers shaking their heads though as they got first place finishes in three of the ten contests and a fourth place finish overall. The low energy usage of the Zehnder ComfoAir 200 ERV was an integral component in Middlebury’s excellent fourth place showing in the Energy Balance contest. The team organized from the combined efforts of Parsons The New School for Design and Stevens Institute of Technology also put out a great effort. With their careful use of resources they captured first place finishes in hot water production and the affordability contests. The Zehnder ComfoAir 200 ERV was utilized in this home as well, displaying that an economically built home can still have a premium quality and high efficiency ventilation system for a healthy indoor environment.
